How to fill in this sheet
Head the sheet before anyone gets wet: teams, date, pool, referee, scorekeeper. Then work down the grid — one row per quarter, four in all, each of 8 minutes of effective time, with a column per team. At the end of each quarter write the goals scored in that quarter alone, not the running total; the Final score line adds the four cells at the end. Every goal in water polo is worth exactly 1 point, awarded when the ball fully crosses the line between the posts and under the bar, so the cells stay clean: no weighting to apply, just a count of goals, which is why +1 is the only value printed under the grid.
Effective time means the clock stops constantly, so an 8-minute quarter runs well past eight minutes on your watch. Tick goals in the margin the moment they are awarded rather than when they are celebrated, and reconcile your quarter figure with the table at every break — a cell closed at the buzzer holds up better than one crossed out twice. If a knockout match ends level it may go to extra time or a penalty shootout, depending on the competition rules. The grid keeps its four rows, so record the decider beside the Final score line rather than squeezing it into a quarter cell, and note whether it came in extra time or from the shootout.
Water polo is a fast scoring sport, and the possession clock is why: a team has 28 seconds to shoot, reset to 18 seconds after a shot rebound or certain exclusions, so cells fill quickly. Use the interval between quarters as your desk — compare your margin with the table, and complete the cap numbers you scribbled at speed while play ran. Caps are your only identification in the water: everyone looks alike once wet, so write the number, never the name, and add the goal time if the fixture matters.
What the scorekeeper watches
Exclusions set the rhythm of a water polo match, and the scorer feels it before anyone else. A major foul sends a player out for 18 seconds of actual play — game time, not stopwatch time — handing the opponent a numerical advantage, and that is when goals arrive. A player who accumulates the number of major fouls the rules set is removed for good, so keep the tally per cap number, not just per team. A penalty throw is awarded for a serious foul by a defender inside the 6-metre area; the throw itself is taken from the 5-metre line — two different figures worth getting right.
Time-outs are scarcer here than in almost any team sport: two per team for the whole game, never refreshed by a new quarter, and none granted for a shootout — so mark each one the instant it is called. How do I keep track of exclusions?
Note each one against the player's cap number. An exclusion lasts 18 seconds of actual play: the clock runs only while the ball is live, so it stretches well past eighteen seconds on your watch. Those seconds hand the opponent an extra player, which is where many goals come from. The per-cap tally matters most — whoever reaches the number of major fouls the rules set is out permanently.
A quarter is 8 minutes, but it took a quarter of an hour. Have I mistimed it?
No — 8 minutes means eight minutes of effective time, and the clock stops at every whistle, so a quarter routinely doubles on the wall clock. What keeps play moving is the possession clock: 28 seconds to shoot, reset to 18 after a shot rebound or certain exclusions. Write the goals of the quarter you have just closed, whatever the wall clock says.
