Before the first snap, fill in the header — teams, date, venue, referee, scorekeeper, competition, match number, category — then read the grid: four rows, one per 15-minute quarter, a column per team, and a Final score line that adds them up. Each cell holds the points of that quarter alone, never a running total, built from the five values printed in the legend: Touchdown +6, Extra +1, Field goal +3, Safety +2, 2-pt conversion +2. A quarter reading 14 usually hides two converted touchdowns; a 10 is typically a touchdown, its kick and a field goal. Between snaps the play clock leaves only 40 or 25 seconds, so tally in the margin and ink the cell when the quarter ends.

Write scores as they compound: 6 the moment the ball crosses into the end zone, then the outcome of the try — 1 for the kick, 2 for the short conversion. A safety hands 2 points to the defense, but it is not the defense's only way to score: a returned interception or fumble is a touchdown like any other, 6 in that same column. Close each row when its quarter ends, and check your addition at halftime rather than at the end of the game. If regulation ends level, overtime formats vary by federation: note those points in the margin, then total everything in Final score before the four signatures.

The legend's second line names two counters, not one — Timeouts and Penalties — and they run on different clocks. Timeouts come three per team per half: tick them as they are burned, then strike the tally clean at halftime, because the second half issues a fresh three and a coach who saved two does not carry five into the fourth quarter. The penalty tally has no reset at all; it runs from the first snap to the last, one mark per flag against the team that drew it. Neither figure ever enters a score cell — both live beside the grid, under the heading the legend calls Sanctions & stoppages.

A safety and a 2-pt conversion are different stories worth exactly the same, which is precisely why the legend prints them under separate names: note which one happened, or your recap will read like a defense that never took the field. The clock counts down from 15 minutes four times, but it stops constantly, so your rows follow the scoreboard's quarter, never the wall clock.

The two counters ask for different habits. Timeouts behave like currency: three per team per half, wiped clean at the break, hoarded for the closing minutes — keep the tally right beside each column, because in the fourth quarter everyone suddenly wants to know how many are left. Penalties never move the score by a single point, since a flag is paid in yards, but they are the most frequent refereeing event of the afternoon and they explain results: false start, holding, pass interference, roughing, delay of game. A 21-17 built on twelve flags is not the same match as a clean one, and only your tally will remember.
