How to fill in this sheet
Handball has one of the shortest grids you will ever print, and for a good reason: the match is played in two 30-minute halves, so you get exactly two rows — Half 1 and Half 2 — one column per team, and a Final score line that adds them together. Start with the header: teams, date, venue, referee and scorekeeper, then competition, match number and category. Every goal is worth exactly 1, whether it came from the wing, a pivot spin or a 7-metre throw, so a cell never holds anything but a plain count of goals.
Write each half's goals in its own row, never the running score: a team trailing 12-14 at the break that wins 27-25 puts down 12, then 15, and the Final score line at the bottom does the addition for you. In handball a goal lands every second or third attack, so tally them in the margin as they come and only transfer the clean figure at the half-time whistle. The Sanctions & stoppages band printed under the grid lists what else you are following: timeouts, 2-minute temporary suspensions, yellow cards and red cards.
There is no player column anywhere on this sheet, so the suspended number goes in the margin — "no. 7, 2 min, 23rd" — and that pencilled line is what tells you when a third suspension turns into disqualification. At the final whistle, check the addition before collecting signatures: both captains, the referee and the scorekeeper sign at the foot of the page, and a correction made after signing is precisely what a match sheet exists to prevent. If the competition needs a winner, the 7-metre shootout — five shooters per team, then sudden death — goes on the shootout scored and shootout missed lines.
What the scorekeeper watches
The score is the easy half of the job: every goal counts 1, and the clock simply counts up through two 30-minute halves. What keeps a handball scorekeeper busy is the disciplinary ladder. The warning first, capped at three for any one team. Then the 2-minute suspension, which leaves that team a player short and deserves a time written beside it. Then disqualification, given after three suspensions or one very serious foul. Add the one-minute team time-outs and you have the whole match: two goal figures, and a discipline column that never stops moving.
Common questions
How do I record a goal scored from a 7-metre throw?
Exactly like any other goal: it adds 1 to that team's total for the half being played. Handball has no multi-point shots — a spectacular finish in mid-air and a calmly placed 7-metre throw are worth the same. If you want a record of it, note the penalty award in the margin; the score cells only ever hold plain counts.
What do I write if the match ends in a draw?
In league play a draw is a perfectly normal handball result: write the level score and stop there — the Final score row simply carries the same number twice. Knockout competitions that need a winner go to overtime, then to 7-metre throws. Record that decider beside the grid and never inside a cell: your two rows must keep telling the story of regulation time.
Is this the official federation match sheet?
No, and deliberately so: this generic model is aimed at training, school sport and club tournaments. It carries no team list and no licence numbers, so nothing on it says which of the seven players scored those twenty-seven goals or who served the 2 minutes — federation forms are built around exactly that roster.
