How to fill in this sheet
Start with the identity block: team names under Team A and Team B, then date, venue, competition, match number and category, plus the referee and the scorekeeper. The grid below holds five rows, one per set — the first four carry a 25-point target, and the fifth is marked 15, because the deciding tie-break set is shorter. At the end of each set, write the exact points each side scored in that row: 25–19, 27–25. Don't just tick the winner — in a tournament, those raw points settle the point differential between tied teams.
A set row is finished when one team reaches its target with at least two points to spare. At 24-24 you simply keep counting — 26–24 and 31–29 are perfectly legal lines on this sheet, since a set has no ceiling, only the two-point rule. If the match goes the distance, that fifth row closes at 15, still with the same margin. The Final score line at the bottom is counted in sets, never in points: 3–0, 3–1 or 3–2, because three set wins take the match. Signatures from both captains and the referee close the record.
What the scorekeeper watches
In volleyball every rally ends with exactly one point for one side — there is no two- or three-point action, which is why the only value printed under the grid is +1. What really keeps a scorekeeper busy is the stoppages strip: each team is entitled to two time-outs per set, and that allowance resets when a new set starts, so tick them off set by set rather than keeping one running total for the match. A missed reset is the classic first-timer's error on this sheet.
Service is the other thread to hold. The team that wins a rally serves the next one, and when a side wins the serve back its six players rotate one position clockwise — a rotation fault is judged at the exact moment of the serve. Between sets the first serve alternates from one team to the other, and a fresh toss decides who serves the fifth. Note that server at the head of each row; it saves arguments twenty minutes later. Indoors, remember that a block does not use up one of the team's three touches.
Common questions
What do I write if a set goes past 25 points?
Keep counting and write the real score. A set is only won with a two-point lead, so at 24-24 play continues until someone pulls two clear — 26–24, 29–27 or higher are all valid entries. The 25 printed on the row is a target, not a ceiling; the deciding fifth set works the same way around its 15-point target.
The match ended 3–0 — what do I do with the two empty set rows?
Leave them blank, or strike a line through them so nobody can add numbers afterwards. The sheet always prints five rows because a volleyball match can run to five sets, but a 3–0 or 3–1 win simply doesn't use them all. Your Final score line still tells the whole story, in sets won.
My club's sheet has rotation and libero boxes — why doesn't this one?
