How to fill in this sheet
Head the sheet before the first pitch. Team A and Team B on the top line — put the visiting side first, since it bats the top of every inning and that keeps the two columns in the order the game is played. Date and Venue next, then Referee and Scorekeeper: write the plate umpire's name in the referee box. Competition, Match no. and Category tie the page to a fixture; a filled-in sheet with no match number belongs to no game at all. Category is also where softball belongs, so nobody later assumes nine innings.
The grid gives you nine rows, Inning 1 through Inning 9, with one box per team. Each box holds the runs that team scored in its own half of that inning — the visitors' top half on the left, the home half on the right. A run goes down when a player touches first, second and third base in order and then home plate. A scoreless half gets a 0, not a blank, or you will not know later whether it was nothing or nobody wrote it down. The Final score line is the plain sum of the column. Softball plays seven innings: rule a line through rows eight and nine before you start.
Two things the grid deliberately does not do. It does not split each row into halves, so if you want the top and bottom of an inning visible at a glance, draw your own diagonal in the box. And it stops at nine, while baseball does not: there is no draw, so a tie after the regulation innings goes to extra innings until one side leads at the end of a complete one. Carry those into the margin, one line per extra inning, and add them into the Final score. A run-ahead rule, if your league uses one, ends the sheet early.
What the scorekeeper watches
The Point values strip reads +1, +2, +3, +4, and each one is a number of runners crossing the plate on a single play. Four in one entry is the extreme case: a home run hit with all three bases occupied brings the batter and every runner home at once. Watch the third out closely, because it is where sheets go wrong: if the third out is a force out, no run counts on that play even if a runner touched the plate first. That is the one rule that turns a 3 into a 2.
The Sanctions & stoppages strip lists three counters that never touch the score: Outs, Balls and Strikes. They are the pulse of the half-inning — three outs and the sides swap, four balls send the batter to first, three strikes retire the batter — and all three go back to zero the moment the half-inning turns over. Do not write them in the run boxes. There is no clock in baseball and none in the app: nothing to start, nothing to stop, and the sheet closes when the regulation innings are complete.
Common questions
Do outs, balls and strikes go in the boxes?
No. Only runs go into the grid — the boxes hold what crossed the plate. Outs, balls and strikes are live counts that reset every half-inning, which is exactly why they have no column: writing three outs into an inning box would leave you with a final score nobody can reconcile. Keep them on a clicker or in your head.
It's tied after nine innings — what do I write?
You keep playing. An official game has no draw: extra innings are played until one team is ahead at the end of a complete inning. The printed grid ends at row nine, so continue underneath it in the margin, one line per extra inning, then total everything on the Final score line.
Can I use the same sheet for softball?
Yes, with one stroke of the pen: softball is seven innings, so cross out rows eight and nine before the first pitch. Everything else transfers — the scoring unit is the same run, three outs still end the half-inning, and four balls still put the batter on first. The pitch is underhand and the diamond smaller, but the sheet does not care.
