Fill the header the way a league night actually works. Team A and Team B are your two bowlers, or two teams if you are totalling by side; Venue takes the centre, and the Category box is a good place for the lane number, because a disputed game is always about which pair of lanes you were on. Date, Competition and Match no. matter if the game belongs to a block, since a block is scored as a sum of games and a loose sheet with no number cannot be added to anything.

The grid is ten rows, Frame 1 to Frame 10, one box per bowler. Unlike the long strip above the lane, each frame here is a single square, so split it yourself: the marks for the two balls in the top corner, the running total underneath. Use the standard marks — X for a strike, / for a spare, a dash for a miss, and the pin count otherwise. Give row ten a little more ink than the others: a strike or a spare there earns a third delivery, so you may have three marks to fit.

The running total is the part people get wrong, and the fix is patience: after a strike or a spare you cannot write the frame's total yet, because you are owed the next one or two deliveries. Leave the lower half of the square empty and come back to it once those balls have been rolled. Everything closes at the Final score line, which can never exceed 300 — twelve strikes in a row. If a total ever climbs past that, the arithmetic went wrong somewhere earlier, and that single check catches most slips before anyone signs.

Three sums cover the whole game. An open frame is worth the pins you knocked down, nothing more. A spare is worth 10 plus the next single delivery. A strike is worth 10 plus the next two deliveries, so a strike followed by a 7 and a 2 is 19 for that frame, not 10 — the bonus is the entire point of the game and the reason totals lag behind the play. The values strip on the sheet says +1 pin, which is the unit you enter, not the unit you score.

You will notice there is no sanctions strip printed under a bowling sheet: the sport declares no cards, no timeouts, nothing that stops a clock, because there is no clock at all. Two things still have to be applied by hand. A foul — touching or crossing the foul line — wipes out the pins from that delivery, so record a zero for the ball even if the rack fell. A gutter ball counts nothing either. Note splits in the margin if you are practising; they cost games later.
